Breckinridge County Herald-News, Hardinsburg, Ky dated Wednesday, June 21, 2000 Page 1, FORMER MAYOR PASSES by David W. Hayes, THN Staff Writer Hardinsburg, Ky. -- Former Hardinsburg Mayor Don YOUNG, 61, died at his home in Kingswood following a seven month bout with cancer. (for a complete obituary, please turn to page 5.) YOUNG served five years as mayor until his resignation last month because of his illness. He had served two years as a member of the city council before his election as mayor. Mayor Wayne Macy said, "Don was someone who was always concerned about other people. I know anytime the city was considering raising a fee or a tax, Don was always asking the question, "What effect is this going to have on our elderly citizens and the people on fixed incomes?" Don's door was always open, and he was willing to help anyone who needed him. If he couldn't help, he would try to find someone who could." He was a lab and X-ray technician for Dr. Robert Chambliss for 31 years, and in the same capacity at the Breckinridge Memorial Hospital from 1970. Hardinsburg Physician, Dr. Robert Chambliss said, "I am saddened at the loss of a fellow worker who worked with me side by side for 31 years. Our office family grieves his loss. Don was more than an employee--he was a friend. To many of my patients, a trip to the office was not complete until they had visited Don. Don cared for people. He asked for the mayor's job not for title, but because he enjoyed helping people. Isn't this what we should all be about? Our thanks to Don for his devoted service to the community, his friendship, and for the memories. Breckinridge Memorial Hospital Administrator and CEO George Walz said, "Don was one of the first people I encountered after moving to Hardinsburg from Owensboro. Professionalism-dependability-dedication sums up Don YOUNG'S life." YOUNG was a member of the Hardinsburg Rotary Club, past president of PTO at Hardinsburg Elementary, a member of the advisory council of the Human Resource Center at Hardinsburg Elementary, a member of the Meade-Breckinridge Chapter of the NAACP, and a Kentucky Colonel. David Wakefield, Project Manager for U.S. Filter Operating Services said, "Seven months ago when I first arrived in Hardinsburg, the first person I met was Don YOUNG. I knew almost immediately that I had met a friend. Not only did he welcome me to this city, he showed me around and...........Continued on Page 2 Page 2 He introduced me to co-workers and friends, but more importantly he invited me to his church. He was a fine Christian man with a lot of integrity, and lived his life accordingly. Personally, I can say he will be greatly missed, not only by myself, but also by his wife, children, grandchildren, his extended family, friends, co-workers, church, and the entire community. Even though he is gone, his influence lives on. My life has been greatly enriched by just having him for my friend." During his funeral procession from Hardinsburg to Kingswood, every intersection was guarded by units of the Hardinsburg fire and police departments as well as units of the Breck Central Ambulance Service.
