"BIRD" ROBERTS KILLED BY TRUCK Tragedy At Kingswood Christmas Evening -- A death sudden and tragic was that which occurred about 7 o'clock on Christmas evening, when Baird L. ROBERTS of Leitchfield, formerly of Kingswood, was killed instantly on the state road in front of the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. ROBERTS at Kingswood. Mr. ROBERTS, with his family, had driven over from Leitchfield for Christmas day with Mr. ROBERTS' aged parents. The families were enjoying the day together and Baird ROBERTS was returning to the house after a short drive. Evidently as he approached the house, the pick-up truck he was driving struck a sheet of thin ice on the road. The truck overturned, skidded, and rolled over an embankment, killing Mr. ROBERTS almost instantly.The man in company with him, Mr. WILSON of that community, was injured and admitted to the Breckinridge County Memorial Hospital, Hardinsburg, for emergency treatment. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at the Kingswood Church. Burial was in the Kingswood Cemetery. Thomas Ellis Funeral Director from Leitchfield was in charge. He had been a patient at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville, Ky., (Shelby County), for several weeks prior to his death. ROBERTS spent his entire life in Kingswood, Ky., and was married to the former Orelia JONES of Glen Dean (in Breckinridge County), Ky., who survives. He served three terms of Mayor of Leitchfield, Ky, and had been an appliance dealer there. He was a member of Leitchfield Lodge #263 F & AM, Scottish Rite and Shriner. He was past president of the Leitchfield Rotary Club, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leitchfield. Edward and Inez moved their family to Kingswood when Clyde was a child, in order to run the Kingswood Orphanage. He graduated from Breckinridge County High School in 1948. He felt called to ministry and attended Frankfort Pilgrim College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion in 1956. The next year, he was ordained as a minister in the Kentucky District of the Pilgrim Holiness Church. In the fall of 1958, he began teaching grade school in a one-room school in Rockvale (in Breckinridge County). The next year he was moved to Irvington Elementary School where he spent the next 27 years. In 1964 he finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University. He was a member of the Kingswood Wesleyan Church for 53 years, where he served on the local church board, taught Sunday School, and worked in children's ministry.
