Cain died this morning. Miss Bevie was the eldest daughter of our neighbor, Wm. H. Cane, who daughter Minnie died some three weeks ago. I have just time to send this notice before the mail closes. F. ****************************** Wagoner, Oklahoma newspaper; 6/26/1913 Close of a Blameless Life The whole city was greatly shocked on Monday by the announcement of the death of Mr. H. V. Cain, which occurred at 10:20 that morning. Mr. Cain was operated on Saturday for appendicitis but on account of the operation having been delayed so long, the appendix had burst and notwithstanding the fact that the finest surgical skill was employed and all that loving hands could do was done, he lost a brave fight for life. Hurlbut Vincent Cain was born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, December 26, 1890. He received his early training in the schools of that county. He attended the Western Kentucky State Normal at Bowling Green, taking a B. S. degree from that institution. After teaching a year, he returned to Bowling Green where he graduated in shorthand in the Bowling Green Business University. In May 1911 he resigned a position with the Mississippi & Yazoo Valley Railroad at Greenwood, Miss., to accept a position in the law offices of J. S. Dickey, Jr., in this city, where he remained till a few weeks since when, without any solicitation on his part, he was appointed deputy clerk of the County Court, which position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Cain was a consistent member of the South Methodist Church and was one of the stewards in that church; he was also treasurer of the Sunday School and an active member of the Epworth League. Those who knew Mr. Cain best loved him most. In his every action he was a gentleman. In speech he was always kind and considerate. He was a loyal, true friend and his great delight was to be of service to his friends. His was one of the brightest minds in the city. He had quite a great deal of literary ability and was a strong, forceful speaker. Above all, he was an earnest, devoted Christian who lived every day right up to those principles which he knew to be right. His life was pure and an inspiration to all who knew him. The funeral services occurred Monday night at the residence of Mrs. W. H. Harlan, where he had made his home for over a year. Dr. Brewer, of the Methodist church, conducted the services and pronounced a beautiful eulogy over the remains of this young man of whom he said, "he had no superior in the whole city." In his death, not only his friends and relatives suffer a loss, but the whole city sustains a loss in the death of Mr. Cain. He is survived by two sisters and brothers - Miss Florence Cain, Louisville, Kentucky; Miss Beverley Cain, Kansas City, Mo.; Dr. W. T. Cain, Underwood, North Dakota, and Mr. R. J. Cain, Irvington, Kentucky. ****************************** Breckinridge County News; 11/--/1965 MRS. R. J. Mrs. S.J. Cain Dies Suddenly-- Correspondent of News for Many Yearas. HER LIFE. A STAR OF HOPE. It is my sad duty to chronicle the death of Mrs. Sallie Jolly Cain, (Golden Rod) which occured at the home of her father, T. J. Jolly last Friday morning at about seven o'clock. Her death was so sudden and a severe shock to the entire community which seemed appalled at the awful hand that so quickly and quietly took home to Him, she, who had seemed so full of life, and health, and strength. She had arisen in the early morning, and while waiting for the breakfast hour wrote a letter to her absent boy "Tom". with a smile and pleasant word for the members of her family. She sat at the breakfast table, and after drinking a cup of coffee, moved from her place at the table to the stove and picked up a house hold pet, and seemed in an unusually fine spirit, when suddenly, without even a groan, she fell from her chair and when the family reached her she had peacefully, without even a struggle, fallen asleep in the arms of Jesus, an while everything possible to restore life was done it was of no avail, and only the lifeless body remained to the agonized family. Mrs. Cain was the eldest child of Thomas and Amanda Lee Jolly. She was born March 20, 1854 and was married to W. H. Cain, Jr. in the fall of 1872. To this union six children were born, five of whom are living while one little baby in infancy passed over to await the coming of the precious mother on this sad day of the New year. These five children, Florence, Robert, Jolly (called Roy), Dr. Will Thomas, Beverly and Hurlbert together with the husband are left to mourn her loss, and to bless and cherish her memory. In the sacred circle where she presided as wife and mother the beauties of a consecrated life shown forth and the legacy of this faithful life is more precious to them than silver or gold. In her church, to which she was a loyal member, since her conversion at the age of twelve years in the Sunday School; in the Missionary Society; her death has left a sad vacancy which time alone will fill. Bro. D.S. Campbell came from Russellville to preach her funeral sermon. Bro. W.H. Roe, her pastor, assisting. Services were conducted at her father's house at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon. A large crowd of sorrowing friends followed her to her last resting place in the Blanford burial ground where she was quietly laid to rest to await the morning of the resurrection, when we will understand what seems at this dark hour a cruel and sudden blow. All we can do is to live so that we may meet her in a better world than this for we believe she is with the angels now, and it is her gain and happiness to be with the Saviour she loved and served so faithfully here. Earth is brighter because she has been here. And heaven is nearer because she has gone there. A Loving Friend ****************************** Breckinridge County News; 8/15/1883 IN MEMORIAM Minnie Hascal Cain. MINNIE HASCAL CAIN was born October 8, 1860, and died August 6, 1883. She was a consistent member of the M.E. Church, South, having been converted in August, 1878, under the ministry of Rev. Leonard Ames, at which time she united with the church. On Sunday, July 22, 1883, she left home for the purpose of spending several weeks visiting relatives and friends in Louisville. She was taken suddenly quite ill, and, before he friends at home could reach her, she had passed away. She was brought home for interment in the family burying-ground at Bewleyville, and on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m., her loving friends gazed on her for the last time until the last day, when all the bloodwashed shall stand forth and see the "King in His beauty." Human wisdom would say how hard that she, just in the full blood of beauteous young womanhood should be called away. But while the hearts of loved ones were aching and bleeding for her, no doubt, as her sister said to the writer, she hovered on angel pinions o'er the weeping band that formed the sad circle round the grave, and wondered why they wept. It was her lot to pass from earth to heaven away from home, where the fond embrace of parents and the tender caresses of loving sisters and brothers were denied her. But she was among friends most kind; and Jesus, best friend of all, was there, and did not forsake her in the last dark hour. Her death has cast a gloom over the community, and the grief of her parents, sisters, and brothers, to all. CAIN'S DEATH Tragic Ending of His Life At Own Hand With Pocket Knife PREVIOUS REPORTS INCORRECT. Perhaps the most tragic death that ever occured in our midst was that of W. H. Cain, Jr., on the morning of Jan. 19 at about 4:00 o'clock at the home of Thos. J. Jolly, where he and his family were temporarily residing. "Billie" Cain, as he was familarly called, whose wife had "died" just two weeks since had grieved over his loss-- one of wife and of home (having recently sold all his earthly possessions) until his mind gave way under the strain. His reason dethroned, he conceived the idea of ending his ----- by taking his pocket knife and cutting his throat. He and his youngest son, Herbert, were sleeping in separate beds in an upstairs room and the night had been spent in restful sleep so far as the son knew. Some twenty or thirty minutes before Herbert arose from his bed he heard his father, as he thought, stepping out from his bed not realizing what had happened until he, himself arose a few minutes later to find his father lying "dead" on the floor. W. H. Cain was born Oct. 25, 1847. In his childhood days he joined the M. E. Church South, and lived in her communion the rest of his life. He was married to Miss Sallie Jolly on Sept. 6, 1872. To this union six children were born, one of them dying in infancy. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and faithful in the discharge of his ---- as a Christian. Loved and respected by all who knew him, he will be greatly missed in the home, in the church, and in the community of which he was an exemplary member. Deceased was 58 years, 3 months, and 24 days old. CAIN. Life Ends For Valuable Citizen Of Bewleyville at Old Age. Bewleyville, Ky., Sept. 12. - Special. William H. Cain was born in Bedford county, Va., May 2, 1822. and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Keith, in Bewleyville, September 5. He was sixteen years old when his father removed to Kentucky. He began business as a farmer for himself, when he was twenty-one. He was twice married: September 21, 1843, to Miss Mary Hardaway, who died October 29, 1850; and, March 11, 1852, to Miss Catherine Hardaway, sister of his former wife. Seven of his ten children are living, all near his old home except Mrs. D. S. Campbell, who lives near Russelville. Mr. Cain's education was limited but, having been a constant reader, he was well informed in matter of church and state and current topics. Mr. Cain was kind, consistent, upright and honorable as a citizen, and was a zealous temperance man. He was early converted to Christianity and it was his earnest endeavor throughout life to be prepared to enter a better life when this one ceased. No man was ever more faithful in the discharge of known duty. Four years ago Rev. Mell held jubilee services in commemoration of the fact that he had been classleader for Bewleyville Society uninterinptedly for fifty years. The even was one long to be remembered and the honor tendered to him was well deserved. The funeral services were conducted at Bewleywille church, by his pastor, Rev. Hynes, who read for his text 2nd. Samuel 3:38, and then made an excellent comment on his life. A large crowd attended the funeral services and the burial at the old family graveyard near Mr. Blanford's. There he was laid to rest among many whom he had loved in this life. ****************************** Meade County Messenger Mildred Avitt Hesler Calebs, 86, of Union Star, died May 6, 2008, at her home. CARLTON Mrs. Lucretia CARLTON, aged about 75 years, died Saturday morning (July 1, 1899) at 5:00 a.m. at the home of Mr. Ed OGLESBY. She had been failing since last fall, and accepted the inevitable with beautiful resignation. She knew the end was coming, and passed away as gently and as peacefully as a child falling to sleep. Mrs. CARLTON'S maiden name was CANNON. Her brother, Capt. CANNON was a famous riverman, and was known throughout the county as the Master of that peerless floating palace and river grey-hound, the "Robert E. Lee", whose history is a part of the history of the southland. Mrs. CARLTON was married twice. Her first marriage took place when she was 17 years old, and she was then united to Mr. POWELL, pilot of the "Marguerite", a famous Mississippi River Steamboat. Two years after her marriage, a tragedy occurred that left her a widow. The steamer "Marguerite" was scheduled for a race from New Orleans on the river to Natchez with another boat. A full head of steam was on, and while Pilot POWELL was standing at the wheel in the "Texas", with a watch in his hand waiting for the moment for the start, an explosion of the boilers took place, and he was among the killed. His body was found 15 months afterward in the river delta fifty miles below New Orleans. A number of years transpired, and the deceased married to Capt. CARLTON, a noted steamboat man whose home was at Hawesville (Hancock County), Ky. They lived happily together for a few years, and she was again left a widow. Mrs. CARLTON was a member of the Methodist Church. She possessed a beautiful character, and her disposition was so sweet, so sympathetic that, as one friend expressed it "she was a woman everyone calls Aunt". She made her home all during her widowhood at Ed OGLESBY'S. The Funeral was held on Sunday (July 2, 1899), at the OGLESBY home, and was largely attended. Among those present were: Mrs. BLACK and Mrs. LONGEST of Hawesville, Ky., and Mrs. STARKS of Louisville, Ky. The remains were sent to Frankfort, Ky. on Monday to be interred beside those of her brother, Capt. CANNON. ****************************** Breckinridge County Herald-News, Hardinsburg, Ky., Thursday, December 28, 1978 OBITUARY Acie M.
